Description
Once part of the cave co-operative at Tain-Hermitage, the family vineyards of Cave Chevalier are gradually being reclaimed by the brother and sister team of Nicolas and Marlène Chevalier. Following his formal agricultural studies in France, Nicolas spent four years honing his winemaking skills on estates in Australia, California and South Africa. He is a firm believer that the quality of any wine is determined largely by its terroir. His own estate’s excellent sun exposure allows for a dependably high quality in the harvest and its northern location provides the grapes with great aromatic potential. The 3.5 acres of vines are farmed sustainably, hand harvested, vinified and bottled according to parcels of distinctly different terroirs of clay and limestone near Chanos-Curson in the heart of the appellation. He produces both Crozes Rouge (100% Syrah) and Crozes Blanc (100% Marsanne) from four distinct sites: Les Pends, la Motte, les Voleyses and Marius.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OF THE ESTATE
We are constantly looking for improvements in order to bound the use of phytosanitary products. Here are some examples of our actions:
– recycling of our used packaging
– vineyard planted with grass
This aspect of the environment is important to us, so as to improve the quality of the job done. We do our best to improve while respecting and preserving nature, our work tool.
REGION
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation in the northern Rhone and produces primarily red wines, with Syrah the only red grape permitted under appellation rules, though the addition of up to 15% white grapes such as Marsanne and Roussanne is allowed. Crozes-Hermitage, along with the rest of northern Rhône, has a continental climate that differs greatly from milder, Mediterranean climate of the southern Rhone. The northern winters are wet and marked by the cold winds of the mistral that can last into the Spring.

Once part of the cave co-operative at Tain-Hermitage, the family vineyards of Domaine Chevalier are gradually being reclaimed by the brother and sister team of Nicolas and Marlène Chevalier. Following his formal agricultural studies in France, Nicolas spent four years honing his winemaking skills on estates in Australia, California and South Africa. He is a firm believer that the quality of any wine is determined largely by its terroir. His own estate’s excellent sun exposure allows for dependably ripe, high quality grapes and its northern location provides grapes with great aromatic character. The 3.5 acres of vines are farmed sustainably, hand harvested, vinified and bottled according to parcels of distinctly different terroirs of clay and limestone near Chanos-Curson in the heart of the appellation. He produces both Crozes-Hermitage Rouge (100% Syrah) and Crozes-Hermitage Blanc (100% Marsanne) from four distinct sites: Les Pends, la Motte, les Voleyses and Marius. The whites are fermented and aged in 400-liter Allier barrels; the reds are fermented in cement tanks and aged in 600-liter Allier demi-muids.
The Crozes-Hermitage Rouge “Marius” is made from 100% Syrah grown in stony clay soil that is covered with the traditional galets roulés of the Rhone. The soil in this vineyard site readily retains warmth and water, allowing the vines to develop to their utmost potential. The wine is intensely aromatic with a delicate wood touch and long finish, offering pleasure in the short term as well as great potential for aging in bottle. It is an excellent match for red meat and game dishes in a rich sauce. Crozes-Hermitage Blanc “Les Pends” is a rich, full-bodied white made from 100% Marsanne grown in stony clay-limestone soil. It is excellent with fish in a fine sauce and lighter meat dishes.
Purplish cherry red color. Very intense nose, very fresh, red berries, blackcurrant, raspberry.
Attack firm and frank, fresh, acidulous. Good sweetness, discreet tannins, melted, fine and elegant.
Aromatic wine, fresh, fruity and tender.
