Winemakers NotesPresentation
The 30 hectares of the Coudoulet de Beaucastel vineyard are just east of the Beaucastel vineyard, on the other side of the A7 motorway. For reasons that will become obvious, he is often considered to be Beaucastel’s baby. When we look at the Coudoulet soil, we realize that there are many similarities with that of Beaucastel. It is composed of Miocene marine molasse covered by an alpine diluvium. This blanket of rolled pebbles contributes a lot to Beaucastel wines: it stores the intense heat of the Mediterranean sun during the day and slowly releases it back to the vines during the night. This allows the vines to get off to a good start in the spring.
The Vintage
The 2023 vintage is characterized by a beautiful climatic balance, which is found in the cellar. The mild winter was followed by a dry spring and then a hot summer, particularly in August and September. Despite a small lack of rain, these conditions allowed the fruit to ripen ideally and the harvest began on August 22 in a perfect state of health. Under a warm and radiant sun, the harvest went perfectly, even if it was necessary to work quickly to prevent the juices from oxidizing with the heat, especially the rosés. The harvest ended on October 4th, with the last devatting on October 23rd. The first tastings reveal very balanced wines: they present richness, power and beautiful concentrations, while having retained a beautiful freshness. A vintage that promises very good promises.
The Wine
Located to the east of the Beaucastel vineyard, Coudoulet covers 30 hectares in the Côtes du Rhône appellation. Its Miocene marine molasse terroir covered by an alpine diluvium of rolled pebbles, identical to that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, gives the wine a unique identity. The harvest, harvested by hand and carefully sorted, undergoes whole-grain heating to 80°C before being cooled to 20°C, then macerated for 12 days in concrete vats. The juices are then pressed and blended grape variety by grape variety after malolactic fermentation, before aging in oak barrels for 6 months, revealing all the elegance and depth of this great Rhône wine.
Tasting
Elegant ruby red colour, clear with purple reflections. Of a beautiful freshness, the nose presents a seductive aromatic bouquet with notes of fresh red fruits such as crushed strawberry. This easy-to-drink freshness continues on the palate with a very nice balance, roundness and a delicious smoothness thanks to supple and velvety tannins and beautiful fruity aromas. Ample and refined, the finish offers a very nice length supported by a hint of salinity. A wine full of finesse for this 2023 vintage.
