Description

2010 is a sunny vintage reminiscent of 2009, although with lower temperatures. The wine itself shows the classicism of the 2008 vintage and the style of the 2005 with additional power. The new double-wall truncated cone shaped vats allow a real plot-by-plot vinification of the Grand Vin for the first time, enabling a pre-fermentary cold maceration to be carried out in optimum conditions. The results are immediately visible both in the aromatic intensity of the fruit and in the quality of tannins extracted. The Cabernet Sauvignon reveals the purity of its fruit with this vintage.2010 promises an exceptional potential! Thanks to a wet and very cold winter 535 mm of rainfall from November to March and repeated frost from December to March, the vines are able to rest and the water supply is satisfactorily replenished. The spring is dry and hot, stimulating growth in the plants that draw water from the soils reserves. The water tables are thus back to their lower level. The flowering is very short and early, comparable to 2009. The blossoming begins in a dry, hot period followed by colder rainy weather that disturbs the end of the flowering process for the Merlots. The Petit Verdots and Cabernets blossom beautifully. The month of July is very hot and sunny 21 out of 31 days bring temperatures over 30C. A green harvest is not necessary the vines are carrying just the right yield, unburdened by an excessive crop. The 41 mm of rainfall in July and August hydrates the plants without really quenching their thirst. September remains hot with some days at 36.5C. Ripeness tests begin on 6th September and show very similar results to those of 2009 high potential alcohol, high acidity and even more promising phenolic analyses than in 2009. The thirsty vines welcome the September rain with 14 mm at the equinox.Comments by the Chateau staff July 2012Colour dark, almost black robe.Nose rich and complex. Fresh fruit aromas mingle with cedar and spicy notes.Palate Attack frank and fleshy, with a surprising aromatic intensity.Mid-palate dense, marked by the power and elegance of the tannins.Finish length in perfect continuity with the complexity, intensity and purity of the vintage. 2010, purity of the fruit and power of a great vintage. – Chateau Leoville Poyferre
