Where in Napa could you find a 100-year old, mixed white, un-trellised vineyard you ask? That’s a question never to be answered, because DeSante’s Proof Vineyard isn’t meant to be commercialized, or really to make wine for anyone to purchase. It’s been in the possession of the same philanthropic family for the past 140 years. The owner today will not sell the fruit they produce because the local hospital had been successful in treating her mother’s disease giving them an extra decade to enjoy life with, and as a thank you to the hospital, decided to donate all the grape juice to the hospital for the life of the vineyard. However, the twist is here. David DeSante is the sharecropper of this particular pearl of vineyard land, and he keeps the location discreet. In return, he gets to produce one barrel of red and one barrel of white wine per year. Organic and dry-farmed. Just honest, great farming to produce one of Napa’s greatest white blends.
