Description
Domaine Jean Grivot is among the great names in Burgundian wine. Étienne Grivot and his wife Marielle took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The vineyards are densely planted and farmed organically “sans certification” while the aim in the cellar is for balance and clear expression of terroir.
Jean Grivot’s 38.3 acres spread across 22 appellations with vineyards in the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Besides the three grand crus, there are 8 premier crus including the much lauded Les Beaux Monts and Suchots in Vosne-Romanée. The grapes are completely de-stemmed and fermentation is spontaneous.
Wine Production
The grapes are destemmed and maceration à froid usually lasts just a day or two. The alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous and malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak is around 30-60% for the premier crus.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows aromas and flavors of red berries, herbs, and purple flowers. The palate is rich with ripe fruit and medium weight with bright acidity and fine tannins. Aging in 30-60% new Burgundian pièce brings notes of vanilla, toast, and baking spices.
Food Pairing
Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-St-Georges Aux Boudots pairs beautifully with lamb chops or wild mushroom tart, enhancing its firm structure, dark fruit character, and savory undertones.

A plush, fruit-filled and aromatic red, this exudes crystalline black cherry, blackberry, boysenberry, floral, spice and mineral flavors. Firms up yet remains balanced, vibrant and long while playing out on the multidimensional finish. Hits all the right notes for the vintage. Best from 2029 through 2047.—B.S. (02/2025)

A stone’s throw from Malconsorts, which borders to the south, Grivot’s Nuits Boudots is always a definite step up in this cellar, with more depth and density on the palate and concentrated plummy fruit with notes of spice and smoke that linger through the impressively long finish. The grapes from Grivot’s 0.85-hectare holding are carefully destemmed and fermented at a reasonably cool temperature with minimal extraction to maintain the silkiness of the fruit: ‘I have always worked the wines in verticality,’ according to Etienne Grivot.(CC, 01/2024)

Note: only the older vines are used for this cuvée. A wonderfully spicy and broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of purple fruit, earth, exotic tea and a floral top note. There is both first-rate density and powerful to the sappy big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully persistent finish. This is terrific and a wine that should age effortlessly.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!* (01/2024)
