Description
Favinia La Muciara is one of the white wines from the
Firriato winery. Every sip will convey a fragment of the soul of its homeland, the island of
Favignana. La Muciara is the name given to the small boat on which the tuna fishery owners would sail to monitor their work routines, a title that reflects the symbiosis this
white wine has with the
sea. In fact, the
terroir where the Favinia La Muciara grapes are grown is truly unique: the vineyards grow just a few meters from the Calamoni cliffs, and—since the Sicilian island is not of volcanic origin like other Mediterranean islands—the vines sink their roots into a sandy soil of Quaternary biocalcarenite, sedimented as it emerged from the sea and brought with it many marine fossils. A unique feature of these crops is that they can be fertilized by
posidonia, a seaweed whose dried leaves are washed ashore by the waves, which imparts its nutritional qualities to the wine. The
climate and sea breeze help the plants stay healthy and absorb the salty scent of the Egadi Islands. Favinia La Muciara is a great tribute to Sicily and is produced with the native
Grillo, Catarratto, and Zibibbo grapes. After hand-harvesting them into wooden crates—which takes place in the first week of September—the
white vinification proceeds with soft pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation. The
aging lasts at least six months on the
fine lees in steel tanks agitated daily. The wine then continues to refine in the bottle for at least another two months.
