The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard has become intrinsically attached to the name of Joh. Jos. Prüm. The Estate owns five hectares of this majestic site. It offers perfect growing conditions for the Riesling grape with its deep, weather-beaten grey slate soil, good water support, extreme steepness of up to 70% gradient, and its optimal south-south-west exposure. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is named after the sundial erected in the vineyard in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of J.J. Prüm, to give the workers a better time orientation. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr possess excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavors (typically stone fruits), a fine minerality, and great depth and length. After having been aged for some years, the harmony, finesse and expression of these wines is unique. Stuart Pigott writes “Joh Jos Prüm’s Sonnenuhrs are classic examples of the way in which the best Mosel wine’s natural sweetness magnifies, rather than obscures, their character.”

One of the great Mosel Auslese masterpieces of modern times, this has all the floral splendor of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard site on the medium-bodied palate, through which an extremely delicate thread of floral honey flows. Then the exotic fruit aromas cascade over you at the extremely long and precise finish. Perfect balance makes this seem much less sweet than it really is.

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule / Auction) opens with a very intense but elegant and delicate as well as flinty bouquet with smoked fruit aromas. Very refined and highly elegant on the palate, this is a super finessed and filigreed, weightless, crystalline and irresistible Auslese with a long, intense yet always refined and stimulating saline finish. A fabulous Auslese indeed! 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

This version is singing, with its alluring beam of sweet apricot, persimmon and apple flavors still coiled. Round and silky, showing rich, decadent lashes of honeysuckle, with notes of savory dried grass and a kick of ground ginger adding pleasing spiciness. A salty mineral vein powers through, while zesty peach skin acidity keeps the energy high throughout.
