Description
Once one of the great fortified wines of Portugal, today this is the last remaining producer of Carcavelos – a wine made of native grapes, fortified while still a touch sweet, and then aged like tawny Port with plenty of oxidization. The grapes are Arinto, Gallego Dourado and Ratinho and the sweet, lightly fortified, wine ages for 12 years in Portuguese (‘Nacional’) oak. The layers of toasted nut and spice flavors recall a top 20 Year Tawny Port, although the acidity is higher here and sweetness less prominent. A lovely post-dinner sip with some blue cheese and candied nuts!
