WINEMAKER COMMENTS

Very concentrated flavors of raspberry, cassis, mocha and root beer burst in your mouth. The aromas are similar, but with a high-toned, perfumed edge to them. This old vine block is predominantly Zinfandel with only a scattering of “field blenders”. Big, rich mouth-coating tannins give way to a long, jammy finish. This wine should age nicely for 4-6 years. — Director of Winemaking Bob Cabral

THE VINEYARD

The grapes for this wine come from a small block of old vine Zinfandel in the Russian River Valley. The Bacigalupi Zinfandel Vineyard is less than 2 acres of 90+ year-old head pruned vines, which naturally yield low tonnage that produces very concentrated wines.

HARVEST 2011

The 2011 vintage was marked by another cool year that produced wines with tremendous purity and depth. Similar in many ways to 2010, without the extremes, it had very low yields and below average cooler weather. But, the growing season in 2011 was much more consistent with gentle warming days and very cold summer nights. As a consequence, the vintage produced wines with incredible purity, remarkable acid and tannin balance, while expressing the uniqueness of each individual site and region. The signature of this vintage is one where the wines have bright fruit qualities, sound acidities and elegant tannin profiles. It is truly a vintage worth seeking.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

94 points Wine Enthusiast (Review Date: 02/2014)

This is a medium-bodied Zinfandel, with elegant weight and mouthfeel. The flavors are classic—wild raspberries and cherries, cola, cocoa and exotic spices. This is surely one of the best Zinfandels of the vintage.

93 points Int’l Wine Cellar (Review Date: 05/2013)

Inky purple. Exotic, expansive aromas of dark berry preserves, apricot, fresh flowers and spicecake. Juicy, palate-staining blueberry and boysenberry flavors show an appealing sweetness and pick up a smoky nuance with air. Closes on an intensely floral note, with excellent clarity and only a hint of tannins. (ST)

91 points Wine Spectator (Review Date: 02/2014)

Balanced and well-focused, showing an elegant sense of complexity, with aromas of raspberry and blueberry and flavors of wildflower, pepper and herbs. Drink now through 2021. (TF)
