Description
The 2007 Niebaum-Coppola “Edizione Pennino” Rutherford Zinfandel pays tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s maternal grandfather, Francesco Pennino, a Neapolitan composer whose legacy inspired the wine’s name. The Coppola family preserved historic Zinfandel plantings on the Rutherford estate, resisting advice to replant, ensuring continuity of vines dating back well before Gustave Niebaum’s acquisition of Inglenook. Crafted at Rubicon Estate (later restored to the Inglenook name), the wine draws on two heritage clones, Morisoli and Werle, whose complementary profiles form the backbone of this bottling. Produced from estate-grown fruit in Rutherford.

A wonderful Zinfandel, made from grapes grown on the estate vineyard. Shows all the briary, brambly, wild berry and spice character you could ask for, in a wine that’s balanced and, in its own way, elegant despite high alcohol. Just floods the mouth with blackberry jam, blueberry tart, anise and freshly crushed black pepper flavors. Best now in its flamboyant youth. (01/2010)
